Cynthia L. Eddy
Past Department President
Cynthia L. “Cindy” Eddy has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for most of her life. At an early age, she developed an interest in genealogy from her mother.
Cindy’s great-great-grandfather, Morton Seth Eddy, was a private in Company A of the 18th Michigan Volunteer Infantry in the Army of the Cumberland. Leaving behind a wife and two-year-old daughter, he enlisted on January 2, 1864 at Adrian, Michigan at the age of thirty and served until June 25, 1865, when the regiment was disbanded. That same day, he transferred into Company A of the 9th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, serving until he was mustered out and honorably discharged at Nashville, Tennessee on September 15, 1865. After the war, Morton S. Eddy moved his family to Kansas and, being a Union veteran of the Civil War, joined Washington Post No. 12 of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Lawrence, Kansas. Eventually, Morton and his family migrated to Southern California where he became a member of GAR Post No. 143 in Escondido, California.
Cindy had another great-great-grandfather, Reuben Nathaniel Killingsworth, who served six months for the Union in Company D of the 6th Missouri Volunteer Calvary (US).
As a way of honoring her ancestors and to learn more about the American Civil War, Cindy joined the Auxiliary to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War on Memorial Day 2008. Cindy previously belonged to Dr. Mary E. Walker Auxiliary No. 52 based in San Jose, California and served two terms as the Patriotic Instructor (2009, 2010) and as Chaplain (2011). She joined Ivy Stiers Auxiliary No. 23 in Santa Rosa, California during its formation in November of 2008 as a Charter Member and has served two terms as Patriotic Instructor (2009, 2010), as Vice President (2010), historian (2011, 2012, 2013) and Press Correspondent (2011, 2012, 2013). Cindy also enjoyed three very busy and productive years as Auxiliary President (2011, 2012, 2013) and is currently serving as a member of the Department Council (2023).
As an active member of the ASUVCW, Cindy has met many wonderful friends and has enjoyed many interesting and important activities. Some of those activities include dressing in 1860s period attire and participating in Memorial Day observances, which included Auxiliary flower laying ceremonies and public speaking opportunities; marching in Veterans Day, 4th of July, and other special parades; staffing booths which provided information to the public at reenactments and living history events; graves registration projects; sending holiday cards to veterans; and giving presentations to elementary school children.
At the Department level, Cindy was honored to serve as Chaplain for the Department of California & Pacific (2013-14), after having served three consecutive terms as Patriotic Instructor (2010-11; 2011-12 and 2012-13). She was also extremely honored to sit in as Patriotic Instructor Pro Tem at her first National Encampment at Overland Park, Kansas in August of 2010. Additionally, she was pleased to be appointed and serve as Color Guard No. 2 at the 2012 Los Angeles, California National Encampment. Having served as a voting delegate to the Department Encampments (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) and the National Encampments (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013), and as an ASUVCW “Life Member”, Cindy looks forward to continuing to be actively involved at all levels of the organization.
