Preserving the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic and our ancestors who fought to preserve the Union 1861 – 1865
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is a patriotic and educational organization, similar to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). It was founded on November 12, 1881 and incorporated by Act of Congress August 20, 1954. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is the legal heir to and representative of the GAR.
Phil Sheridan Camp No. 4 of the SUVCW was formed on December 4, 1897 and is the oldest Camp in the Department of California and Pacific. It was named for and sponsored by the Phil Sheridan Post No. 7, GAR of San José, California which was in turn named for General of the Army Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888).
- AREA: The Camp serves the Northern California counties of Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Benito, Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Francisco (shared with Gen. Alfred Pleasonton Camp No. 24).
- MEETINGS: The Camp generally meets bi-monthly on the third Saturday of odd numbered months, at Oak Hill Memorial Park, 300 Curtner Avenue, San Jose, California.
- NEWSLETTER: Sheridan’s Dispatch is generally published bi-monthly.
- MEMORIAL DAY PARTICIPATION: Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose, California and other locations.
- VETERANS DAY PARTICIPATION: Veterans Day Parade, Downtown San Jose, California.
- DUES: Annual Camp dues are $45.00 with a one time Application/Admission Fee of $10.00.
